A Special request to all you kids returning to school in the next few days: If you see someone who is struggling to make friends or being bullied because he/she doesn’t have many friends or because they are shy or not as pretty or not dressed in the most “in” clothes — PLEASE step up. Say hi or at least smile at them in the hallway. You never know what that person might be facing outside of school. Your kindness might just make a BIG difference in someone’s life!

10 Things I Learned My Freshman Year of College
1. There IS extra credit in college. High school teachers lie.
2. Set out your clothes the night before so you can make the least amount of noise possible for your roommates.
3. Everything is a competition. EVERYTHING. Who’s classes are easier, who has the better schedule, which dining hall is better, who gets more opportunities to raise their grades…everything.
4. Get naps in every chance you can. For some reason, days seem longer up here than in high school. Probably from the space between classes.
5. The weather won’t be perfect, so enjoy the nice days. And try not to slip and fall on ice four times in one week… I did and I had the bruises to prove it.
6. Get to know your professors. They can get you into conferences you may not be able to attend otherwise.
7. Don’t Procrastinate. Get work done way before it’s due if possible. And never wait until the last minute to print something out for a class. That is when the printer with jam. Stupid Murphy’s Law.
8. Writing out the work due each week can help you figure out your priorities and show you visually what needs to be done each day.
9. iPods are good ways to block out noise if you want to go to sleep earlier than your roommates. Keep it low and focus on the music rather than the other sounds, and you’ll be sleeping before you know it.
10. Boozel has surprisingly good breakfasts. Going there between morning classes rather than going back to the room is always a better option if you ask me.
